REQUIREMENTS Eligibility: Be a registered full-time college student in good standing & currently in attendance preferably majoring in Administration of Justice, Police Science, Criminal Science or a related field and intend to continue their education in the next regular semester.
Physical Condition: Must be able to meet the health and physical condition standards of the position
Distance vision: 20/20 binocular vision, with or without correction. Vision correction by soft contact lenses. Soft contact lens wearers must have 20/200 or better binocular vision before correction, corrected to 20/20. Applicants must provide certification that he/she has successfully worn soft contact lenses for the past 12 months.
Vision correction by other than soft contact lenses (e.g., glasses, hard contact lenses, semi-rigid contact lenses). Wearers must have 20/40 or better binocular vision before correction, corrected to 20/20.
License: Possession of a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Hawaii (equivalent to Hawaii Type 3). (Must submit copy of valid driver's license at time of filing.)
Residence: Applicants must be a State of Hawaii resident at the time of application.
Citizenship: All persons seeking employment with the government of the State or in the service of any county shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States at the time of their application for employment and shall become residents of the State within thirty (30) days after beginning their employment and as a condition of eligibility for continued employment. You must provide evidence verifying your citizenship or alien registration status and employment authorization in the United States at the time of application.
NOTE: Applicants must meet these requirements at time of application. Failure to submit a complete application, copy of valid driver's license and verification of citizenship status for permanent resident aliens, at the time of application, may result in the rejection of your application.
EXAMINATION WEIGHT: Drug Screening Test: Qualifying (Pass/Fail) The drug screening test, conducted by the Department of Police, will be administered on the Island of Maui only. The drug screening test will be required only for individuals selected for a position with the Department. There is no retesting or re-evaluation process.
As part of the selection process, the Department of Police will require that an applicant fill out a Police Department "Personal History Questionnaire" to investigate your character and background. The information you provide will be verified.
FIREARMS REQUIREMENT Police Officers are required to carry a firearm. In order to be eligible to carry a firearm in the State of Hawaii, you must meet all of the following requirements: 1. Not currently under indictment for, or have been convicted in the State or elsewhere of having committed a felony or any crime of violence, or the illegal sale of any drug. 2. Not having been committed to a mental institution. 3. Not having ever been admitted, pursuant to Chapter 333 of the Hawaii Revised States, for mental retardation (Voluntary admission to Waimano Home). 4. Not having ever been under treatment for addiction to any harmful, dangerous, or detrimental drug. 5. Not having been under treatment for addiction to any intoxicating liquor or intoxicating compound. 6. Not having been admitted to and detained at a psychiatric facility. 7. Not having been acquitted of a crime on the grounds of mental disease, disorder, or defect. 8. Not having been under treatment for significant behavioral, emotional or mental disorder. 9. Not having been under treatment for any organic brain syndrome. 10.Not having been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of “domestic violence” which means an offense that is a misdemeanor under Federal or State law, and has, as an element, the use of or attempted use of physical force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon, committed by a current or former spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim, by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common, by a person who is cohabiting with or has cohabited with the victim as a spouse, parent, or guardian, or by a person similarly situated to a spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim.
