Under the direction of the Hawaii Revised Statues, the Fire Chief is required to provide fire protection for the County of Maui. In addition to firefighting, fire protection includes a wide range of prevention measures including:
  • Formulation and adoption of fire codes
  • Inspections to insure compliance with the codes
  • Investigations to determine the causes of fires
  • Education of the public regarding fire safety
  • Permit and Plan Review

The Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible to carry out these duties for the Fire Chief.

The Fire Prevention program is essential to abate fires and life-safety hazards before they can cause injury and property damage. This is accomplished by working with all firefighters to inspect all schools, hospitals, and commercial buildings. The Department also strives to:
  • Seek the correction of any hazards found
  • Educate residents in fire prevention practices
  • Review plans for commercial buildings by ensuring all fire safety features are included before the building is built
  • Review, update, and enforce the County Fire Code
  • Investigate fires to determine their origin and cause to aid in information on future fire hazards, awareness, and the prosecution of arson case
  • Maintain inspection and investigation records and reports to measure the results
