Film, Video, and Television in Maui CountySince the inception of the Film Office in 1994, we have been able to track the growth of the film industry increasing to $8 million in 2002 from $6 million in 2001. This is the result of film, television, video, and still photography projects selecting Maui County as their shooting destination.
Locations Book and Locations VideoPrior to FY 2000, this business was procured utilizing then state of the art technology but in January 2000, the County Film Office created two tools that are now actively used to solicit new business, a locations book and a locations video. Also completed in October of 2000 was a production guide (listing the local crew base on the island, which is second only to Oahu's) and by December 2000 an upgraded website featuring all the aforementioned tools as available to all those thinking of choosing Maui County as their filming destination.
Trends for the FutureIn FY 2003 the website will continue to be updated and stay current with the trends for the future. Additionally, a complete and updated photo library was created utilizing existing location photos coupled with those of top Maui based photographers. The photo library has been made available to the State Film Office to assist them in further soliciting film industry business for Maui County. Thanks to these pro-active marketing and promotional efforts, the film office has continued to garner world wide support from top flight film makers which will generate dollars for Maui County.
County film revenues have been steadily rising. Revenues for the first three quarters of 2002 are in the range of $3.5 million. More than 300 projects ranging from feature films, to television commercials to documentaries to music videos and still photo shoots came to Maui County in FY 2002. And the trend to increase our production is on the upswing.
Staying CompetitiveMaui County and the State of Hawaii compete with many other destinations for film business. To help us be more competitive, the Film Offices of the Hawaiian Islands have worked diligently with the Legislature to pass Act 221 in FY 2001 as well as a Resolution to create a Film Industry Board to work with the Film Industry. With the enactment of Act 221 the incentive to work in Hawaii was greatly enhanced. Countries around the globe have come to realize the impact of the highly lucrative film business and this Act proves that Hawaii is just as aware of the impact to our economy.
Television and FilmsTelevision commercials were another source of revenue for the film industry. Nabisco, Toshiba, Volvo, Marlboro, Novell, and Toyota are just a few of the companies who found the backdrop of Maui County the perfect way to spread the word about their products.
Videos for the kids "Let's Be Safe" to a six part Living Arts yoga series abounded. Music videos by the young singing sensations The Moffits and L.L. Cool J also found the beauty of the island to their exact specifications.

Some of these shows were, "I Survived," Animal Adventures," and "Extreme Hawaii." Also the Learning Channel, Fox TV, A&E and "E Entertainment Television" all featured shows highlighting Maui County.
